ArbZG

The ArbZG is the German Working Time Act: at most eight hours per working day, up to ten with compensation, and a break of at least 30 minutes after more than six and 45 minutes after more than nine hours of work.

Breaks may be split into periods of at least 15 minutes, and nobody may work more than six hours in a row without one (§ 4 ArbZG).

The Act itself only requires recording the working time that exceeds eight hours; those records are kept for two years (§ 16 (2) ArbZG).

The wider duty to record the start and end of every working day follows from the Federal Labour Court's 2022 decision (see Zeiterfassungspflicht).
