Krankenfahrt
A Krankenfahrt is a ride by taxi, hire car, private car or public transport to a treatment the health insurer covers, without medical care during the ride (§ 7 Krankentransport-Richtlinie).
Hire cars include vehicles fitted for carrying wheelchair users; patient rides exist for inpatient as well as outpatient treatment, outpatient only in the directive's exceptional cases.
A taxi or hire car may only be prescribed if the patient cannot use public transport or a private car for compelling medical reasons (§ 7 (3)).
If the patient needs qualified care or the equipment of a patient-transport ambulance during the ride, it is no longer a Krankenfahrt but a Krankentransport.
